As Sensei has said recently, it was common for the samurai to study an art along side budo. It might be cha-no-yu (tea ceremony), haiku (poetry), ikebana (flower arrangement), or calligraphy, among others. During the latest very excellent adventure that Dale-san and I had (see photo) which included a bonsai course with a world-renowned master, we talked to Mr. Will Heath, a director of the Four Seasons Bonsai Club in Michigan. He agreed to travel to the dojo in the next month or so to give a hands on course in the philosophy, pruning, wiring, potting, and upkeep of bonsai. The cost will be $15 or $20 or so, to be defined later, and will include a starter plant of your own. This will happen on a Saturday, and we will have keiko, go to lunch, and then reconvene for the course back at the dojo.
Included here are pictures of some of his bonsai. This is a brief bio:
Will Heath, is an outdoorsman, archer, and amateur mycologist who first became enamored with bonsai by following his desire to capture pieces of nature he observed while in the forests of Michigan. He is an editor and co-founder of the Art of Bonsai project, the Knowledge of Bonsai forum, and the show chairman of the Four Seasons Bonsai Club. His educational articles and humorous stories have been published in Bonsai Today, the ABS Journal, and newsletters around the world.
There will be a sign up sheet very soon. We really hope to have a good turn out for this.
