TOLEDO AIKIDO: Bodhidharma's "Two Entrances and Four Practices" (part 1 of 3)

First Steps

Visitors are welcome to observe any class held at the dojo. Just come out when you can, there is no need to call first or register.

When you arrive, please put your shoes on the rack and enter the training hall, either taking a seat on the futon couches provided or sitting in seiza near the edge of the mat. A dojo member will introduce themselves shortly.

Should you choose to join the dojo email list at the link at the bottom of this page, you will recieve a series of quotes from the founder of Aikido, Morehei Ueshieba Sensei every 5 days and will be get any special announcements that are broadcast.

Of particular interest to those considering taking up the practice of Aikido is a book called "The Aikido Student Handbook: A Guide to the Philosophy, Etiquette and Training Methods of Aikido." All Basics Seminars are Saturday from 9-noon and 3-5pm.

All Weapons Seminars are Saturday 10-noon and 3-5pm, and Sunday morning 10-noon.

All Gasshuku are Friday 6-8pm, Saturday 10-noon and 3-5pm, and Sunday 10-1pm.

Additional 2008 events are the Okugyo retreats in Vermont with Gleason Sensei and I Feb 20-24 and Apr 23-27. Ikeda Sensei in Oberlin May 2-4, The Summer Shobu Gasshuku in Boston yet to be scheduled, and Saotome Sensei in Chicago Thanks giving weekend. I hope to schedule in three additional Okugyo with Gleason Sensei in the last half of 08 as well.

Truly, we have an extrordinary abundance of opportunities to train, so lets dig in!

About the Video Clips

Our intention here first of all is to create a way for those students unable to attend class to stay connected with what is happening at the dojo, and also to create a dojo archive for general reference. In viewing these instructional clips, be aware that they come about in the context of a particular class, and point out aspects of Aikido that I felt needed to be brought out for those on the mat at the time, and that no amount of viewing will substitute for solid training on the mat! That being said, please enjoy them. - Jay

Bodhidharma's "Two Entrances and Four Practices" (part 1 of 3)

The Drinking Gourd Podcast presents a retreat workshop with Jay Sensei at the Toledo Zen Center on January 20th, 2008.

This workshop begins with a historical overview of Bodhidharma's time and the teachings ascribed to him as they relate to other spiritual teachings of the day. After this, Chikyo begins working with the text: "There are many avenues for entering the Way, but essentially they all are of two kinds: entering through Principle and entering through Practice..."
